From staff reports

In Wilmington, Delaware, Gavin Collins blasted a pair of home runs and had three RBIs to jumpstart Lynchburg’s offense, and the Hillcats never trailed in an 8-4 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Wednesday at Frawley Stadium.

Collins (3 for 5) sent his first long ball over the left-field fence with two outs in the first inning, giving Lynchburg (31-32) a 3-0 lead it never surrendered. The Hillcats went up 4-0 on Collins’ second home run of the day in the fourth inning, then tacked on a run on Connor Smith’s double in the sixth.

Wilmington (41-24) made things interesting with back-to-back two-run frames in the fifth and sixth, when it tallied eight of its 10 hits, to cut the lead to 5-4. But Lynchburg responded in the eighth, spacing things out and bringing the final score to 8-4 with a two-run single from Luke Wakamatsu and an RBI double from Steven Kwan (2 for 5).

Oscar Gonzalez and Smith recorded two hits apiece for the Hillcats, who had 11 hits. Gonzalez and Smith each tallied one double while both of Kwan’s hits went for two bases.

The Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7 hitters (Dennicher Carrasco, Cristian Perez, Colby Schultz and Sebastian Rivero) did the most damage for Wilmington with two hits each.

Aaron Pinto (1-0) earned the win in relief in his second appearance with Lynchburg. He allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits, walked none and struck out four in 2 2/3 innings.

Wilmington starter Kris Bubic (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (all earned) on six hits, walking two and fanning four in 5 1/3 innings.

The Blue Rocks and Hillcats will be in Lynchburg to begin a four-game series today at 6:30 p.m. at City Stadium.
