From staff reports

In Williamsburg, Rustburg rising senior Nick Rakes was all square against Ben Cooper after 14 holes Thursday in the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship at Williamsburg National Club.

Then Cooper, a University of Richmond signee, took control.

He won the next two holes and halved No. 17 to defeat Rakes 2 and 1 in the Round of 16 in the match play portion of the championship.

Rakes, who secured the No. 10 seed for match play after shooting even par in the two rounds of stroke play, lost two of the first three holes before rallying to make it all-square after winning No. 10.

Cooper took a 1-up lead after claiming No. 11, and that lead stood after both halved Nos. 12 and 13.

Rakes won No. 14 to make the round all-square again, but Cooper claimed the next two holes to go 2-up.

Cooper and Rakes both needed five shots at No. 17 to give Cooper the 2-and-1 triumph.
