From staff reports

In Williamsburg, Rustburg rising senior Nick Rakes shot 3-under-par 69 Wednesday and was one of 16 golfers to advance to the match play portion of the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship at Williamsburg National Golf Club.

Rakes finished at even par for the two stroke play rounds and is the No. 10 seed for match play. He is scheduled to face Ben Cooper at 8:20 a.m. today, and the winner advances to the quarterfinals later in the day.

The Rustburg native shot five shots better on the front nine Wednesday than in his opening round Tuesday with a trio of birdies and one bogey. He bogeyed No. 13 to move to 2 over for stroke play, but birdied Nos. 14 and 18 to get to even par and two shots above the cut line of 2 over.

Charlie Kennedy, the round one leader, earned medalist honors for stroke play by shooting 9 under and finishing three shots ahead of Bryce Corbett.

Jefferson Forest rising seniors Garnet Manley (6 over) and Jonathan Peterson (9 over) failed to make the cut. Liberty Christian rising senior Lane Weems shot 14 over and did not make the cut.

Manley, who completed a Hurricane Junior Golf Tour event Sunday and then won a VSGA Junior Circuit event Monday, shot 3 over for the second straight day. He was at even par for his round Wednesday when he reached the turn, but bogeyed Nos. 10, 15 and 16 before birdieing 17 and then bogeying No. 18 to finish with his second straight 75.

Peterson was in position to advance to match play after shooting 3 under through his first 10 holes Wednesday, but he shot 10 over for his final eight holes with six bogeys and two double-bogeys to fall to 9 over for stroke play.

Weems shot 5 over on Tuesday and then posted a 9-over 81 in the final round of stroke play.
