The 2019 preseason kicked off Thursday, as area squads took part in the first official day of high school football practice. The Virginia High School League changed its rules in 2011 to allow what virtually amounts to year-long practices, but Thursday marked the first day of 2019 that football players were allowed to practice in helmets and take part in two-a-days. They now begin the evolution toward wearing full pads. Most area squads practiced Thursday morning to avoid the heat. The high school football season begins Thursday, Aug. 29, when E.C. Glass hosts Charlottesville at Lynchburg City Stadium, and continues Friday night, Aug. 30.
