From staff reports
Forest natives Zack Hess and Zach Peek signed contracts with their respective MLB organizations Friday.
Hess, a right-hander who attended LSU and Liberty Christian, received the full pick signing bonus value of $227,700 from the Detroit Tigers. The seventh-round selection is projected to be a relief pitcher in the professional ranks after he started the past two seasons with LSU. Hess utilizes an upper-90s fastball and a wipeout slider in his arsenal.
He was 4-5 with a 4.71 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 70 2/3 innings as a junior.
Peek secured a $267,800 signing bonus after being selected in the sixth round by the Los Angeles Angels. The right-hander from Jefferson Forest and Winthrop is projected as a starting pitcher with a four-pitch repertoire that includes a low-90s sinker, a hard four-seam fastball, a curveball and a changeup.
Peek was a second-team all-Big South Conference selection, and finished his junior season with a 7-3 with a 4.02 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 87 1/3 innings this past season.
The two were selected 21 picks apart in the sixth and seventh rounds of the draft.
