Russell David "Dave" Reid Jr. died peacefully on Wednesday, June 5, 2019, after a long journey with Parkinson's disease and Vascular Dementia. Born on July 31, 1932, in Clifton Forge, Va., he was the son of the late Grace Johnson Reid, and Russell D. Reid Sr. After graduating from Clifton Forge High School, he joined the U.S. Army where he proudly served during the Korean War. He returned home to earn a doctorate degree in Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic University, and worked in the engineering field and taught at E.C. Glass High School before becoming a college professor. "Mr. Reid" retired as Professor Emeritus from Central Virginia Community College where he taught automotive and mechanical engineering, as well as welding and metal fabrication for more than 40 years. After retiring he continued teaching courses for ASE Certification and gun safety for the NRA. He was an avid outdoorsman and an enthusiastic fan of the Va. Tech Hokies and Washington Redskins. He was a past member of the Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge, and a longtime member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir for many years. He is survived by his wife, Frances Smith Reid; stepson, Allison Losh; daughter, Grace Verderosa and her husband, John; and his sister, Mary Ann Laughlin and her husband, Jim. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Elton Johnson and wife, Faye; sister-in-law, Nancy Baker and husband, Richard; and grandson, Tyler. In addition, he is survived by countless nieces, nephews, and the extended Trawick family, all of whom he adored. He was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Johnson Reid; his sister, Betty Jo Smith; brother-in-law, Buddy Smith; and stepson, Brady Losh. The family would especially like to thank everyone at Bentley Commons, and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for the unparalleled care and compassion they have continually provided. A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 2019, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Pastor Les Whealton officiating. The family will receive friends following the service until 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
