A woman who managed a Lynchburg apartment complex pleaded guilty Wednesday to embezzling more than $22,000 by stealing payments from residents.
Brenda Inez Waller, 53, of Madison Heights, was charged with six counts of felony embezzlement tracing back to her time as a manager of the Jefferson House apartments near Lynchburg General Hospital. The apartments were run by Liberty Management Inc., based in Portland, Maine.
Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jennifer Bennett said Waller would collect cash and money orders from tenants and file the amounts in a ledger as being forwarded to Liberty Management, but never actually forwarded them. Waller did so between July 2015 and June 2018, Bennett said.
In a plea agreement presented Wednesday to Lynchburg Circuit Court Judge F. Patrick Yeatt, Bennett dropped one of the six charges and Waller pleaded guilty to the other five. Bennett and Waller’s attorney, Keith Orgera, haven’t made a sentencing agreement.
The total amount Waller embezzled and will have to pay back in restitution, according to Bennett, is $22,777.28.
Court records indicate Waller was an apartment manager for Meadows Apartments starting in June 2018. A property manager at Meadows said Wednesday that Waller was terminated from there soon after she was indicted in December.
Waller remains out of jail on bond. She’s scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 28.
