After being ejected from the bed of a pickup truck, 19-year-old De Andre Najee Smallwood Davis, of Danville, was pronounced dead at the scene of a single-vehicle crash in Pittsylvania County early Sunday morning, Virginia State Police report.
The 1996 Ford F-150 was traveling north on Whitmell School Road around 12:30 a.m. when it veered off the left side of the road, hit an embankment and flipped over. Speed and alcohol are both believed to be a factor in the crash, state police report.
Six people were in the truck when it crashed — two in the passenger section of the cab and three in the bed. Of the two others that were ejected from the truck's bed with Davis, one was transported to Sovah Health-Danville, while a medical helicopter transported another who suffered life-threatening injuries to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
The three inside the cab, including the driver, Cody Lee Barber, 19, were not wearing seat belts, police report. They endured injuries and were transported to Sovah Health-Danville.
Charges are pending, police report.
State police continue to investigate and are looking to obtain more information on the passengers. The names of the other four passengers were not provided.
