A Madison Heights day care center is temporarily operating in another space after its building suffered damage in a fire Wednesday.

Step By Step Early Learning Center was among a few businesses affected when a fire broke out in a portion of the Town and Country Shopping Center on U.S. 29 Business. No one was hurt in the blaze that officials said was contained within a half hour upon fire crews arriving.

According to a post on its Facebook page Thursday, Step By Step Early Learning Center’s two-story space had heavy water damage and will not be allowed back in for a week at least. Reopening in the center could take weeks, according to the post.

The center plans to reopen Tuesday at 120 Dillard Road in a space it has secured on a temporary basis, the post said.

A few witnesses on the scene told The News & Advance Wednesday they saw heavy black smoke and flames from the roof above the learning day care and Absolute Tanning, another affected business.

The fire remains under investigation, said Sam Bryant, director of public safety.
