Boonsboro Shopping Center opened in May 1965 on what was then the western outskirts of Lynchburg, situated on a 125-acre tract that had been annexed by the city from Bedford County in 1964. The shopping center was part of a wave of retail destinations created away from downtown. Pittman Plaza opened in 1960, and Fort Hill Village opened in 1962 off Timberlake Road. Among the early stores at Boonsboro Shopping Center: High’s Ice Cream, Winn-Dixie and a movie theater that opened five months later.
