This year’s group of Lady Lancer basketball players is counting on its four seniors to lead the team in hopefully improving on last year’s 8-12 record.
“Our seniors are multi-sport athletes that bring a lot of experience from years of competition,” said Amherst Coach Ron Carter. “They started with me as eigth graders five years ago and I look forward to seeing them complete their senior season with success.”
Carter breaks down his quartet of senior leaders:
Aneesa Parrish: “She will be our primary point guard and will be a leader for us offensively. Aneesa has become more of a scorer for us and will need to continue in that role.”
Holland Saunders: “She brings energy and toughness while being our top outside shooting threat.”
Jazmyne Smith: “She is a versatile player that plays with energy and intelligence on offense and defense.”
Dominique Irving: “She has really improved her ability to drive and shoot the ball and will be relied upon to do that this season.
“We believe that we are capable of being one of the top three teams in the district this year,” Carter said. “That is a goal that we will be trying to obtain as we also prepare for a run in the region tournament. We have a great group of young ladies and I look forward to a fun season.”
Remaining players are Mackenzie Kendra Smith, Kiara Smith, Ta’Kiyah Campbell, Jasmine West and Nadia West. Team manager is McKenzie Paige and assistant coach is L.A. Robertson.
Amherst will open the regular season Dec. 2 on the road at Nelson County.
