The Amherst Lancer junior varsity baseball team picked up two wins last week before suffering a loss on Friday to Liberty Christian Academy.

First, Amherst defeated Nelson 8-7 on Jonah Cunningham’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. The win avenged an earlier defeat to Nelson. Cunningham and Alex Mitchell both had two hits while Hunter Catlett drove in three runs. Cunningham also picked up the win in relief.

The following night, the JV Lancers defeated Liberty 5-3. Amherst broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning, taking advantage of two Liberty errors during the inning. The Lancers were held to only four hits but five Minutemen errors aided in the Amherst win. Cyrus Campbell had two hits to lead the offense. Dakota Maberry picked up the win with one-and-a-third innings in relief of starter Alex Mitchell.

Finally, the JV squad ended the week with a 7-1 loss to LCA. It was the second defeat of the season to the Bulldogs. Once again the Lancer offense struggled with only four hits. Luke Mitchell drove in the only Amherst run. Cunningham suffered the loss.

Amherst, now 12-4, will complete the season May 10 at E.C. Glass. Game time is 5 p.m.
