The Lancer varsity baseball team was limited to only one hit, a second inning single by Lucas Dickerson, in dropping a 12-0 contest to district foe Brookville last week at Lancer Field.
Leading 2-0 after three innings, the Bees scored 10 runs over the next two innings to complete the season sweep over the Lancers. Brookville defeated Amherst 3-2 in eight innings earlier in the season. The Lancers struck out 10 times and committed four errors in dropping to 5-6 on the season. Timmy Byers picked up the loss on the mound for Amherst.
The Lancers return to action after spring break, traveling to Appomattox on Monday, April 22 and Rustburg the next day. Amherst will host Jefferson Forest Friday, April 26. All games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
JV Lancers offense erupts in win over Brookville
The Amherst junior varsity baseball team picked up its ninth win of the year with a 16-1 pounding of the Brookville Bees last Thursday at Lancer Field.
After falling behind 1-0 after the first inning, the JV Lancers erupted for 10 runs in the second inning. Amherst sent 15 hitters to the plate with six hits during the big inning. The JV squad finished off the win with six more runs in the fourth inning to complete the five-inning victory. Bryce Goodwin led the Lancer offense in going 3 for 3 with three runs scored. Brandon Franklin added two hits and two RBIs. Dakota Maberry, Cyrus Campbell and Jonah Cunningham each added two RBIs while Trevor Moore knocked in four runs.
Alex Mitchell picked up the win with the complete game effort. Mitchell allowed one run, three hits, walked four and struck out eight.
The JV Lancers, now 9-2, return to action on Monday, April 22 at Appomattox. The following day Amherst will travel to Rustburg before returning home on Friday, April 26, hosting Jefferson Forest. All contests begin at 5 p.m.
