The Rustburg Red Devils softball team jumped on the Lady Lancers for six first inning runs last Friday during the Seminole District quarterfinals.
The Rustburg bats were getting solid hits that included a home run and a few errors while the Amherst defense didn’t help Lady Lancer starting pitcher Elizabeth Carter, who was tagged with the loss. Holland Saunders had a 2-for-3 day at the plate while scoring her team’s only run. Amherst gave up two runs in the fourth.
“This was a tough loss for the team against a strong Rustburg team and excellent pitcher,” said Amherst coach Samantha Thacker. “The girls still worked hard each inning and did not give up without a fight.”
The Lady Lancers’ record falls to 8-12 while Rustburg is sitting on a 17-4 record.
Despite the loss Amherst will play in the regional tournament on May 23 as they will head to Lynchburg to battle Liberty Christian Academy at 5 p.m.
