Amherst boys tennis coach Robert Martin has more than a dozen competitors battling it out for the team’s top six spots.
“We have been improving throughout the season,” Martin said.
He said there are just more than a dozen players on the team and each has gotten better since the season’s start.
“We have had some close matches and are gaining experience with each one.”
Martin said the Seminole District tournament starts this week and the Lancers open up against Liberty Christian Academy.
“The week after is the singles and doubles portion of the tournament where I have Dearndre Sandidge and Colson Davis representing the Lancers,” he said. “We were a young team this year with three of my top six playing for the first year, but I am confident with how we have improved and look forward to next season.”
Martin breaks down his top players with his comments on each.
Dearndre “Scooby” Sandidge: “Scooby is the only senior on the team this season. His effort, work ethic and great attitude have given him a successful and competitive season this year.”
Colson Davis: “This is Colson’s second year playing and he has improved since last season. His serve is getting stronger, his ground strokes are more consistent and he is developing more confidence as the season progresses.”
Riley Cox: “This is Riley’s first year playing for the team. He has a solid forehand and is getting better with each match as he gains experience.”
Manford Campbell: “This is Manford’s second year playing and he has a great forehand and backhand. He is getting more aggressive with those shots enabling him to finish points quickly.”
Ryan Pugh: “This is Ryan’s first year playing and he has had a very solid season. He is a very consistent player and that has led him to have competitive matches throughout the season.”
