The Amherst Belles toughest opponent in last week’s District II championships held in Spout Spring was the weather.
One of its games was postponed due to rain and in the championship game lightning caused a brief delay before the Amherst team defeated Appomattox 11-1 to win the District II title. The Belles now have a chance to play for the state crown to be played in Rustburg in July.
Amherst pitcher Ambyre Taylor controlled the action in the circle by pitching the entire game with six strikeouts while walking one batter among the 23 she faced.
Taylor also recorded the biggest hit of the night when she belted a three-run home run.
Mariah Scruggs, Maddie Mason, Lauren Angus, Ashlyn Thacker, Courtney Klingler, Ally Stoops, Katie Bloom, Emma Cash, Kaylah Faris and Micayla Johnson each had hits or scored runs.
Before the title game Amherst faced Appomattox on June 17 and won that contest, 11-4.
Taylor and Delaney Sipes handled the pitching duties.
Thacker had a 2-for-3 night at the plate along with scoring two runs and one RBI.
Angus got a hit and scored a run, Scruggs scored a pair of runs, Mason and Stoops scored each scored a run, Sipes added two runs, Klingler scored once and Bloom added a run while multiple Amherst batters recorded hits.
