Florence Elizabeth Boyd Powell "Betty", 90, of Roseland, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2019. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on March 27, 1929, she was a daughter of the late James and Grace Brown Boyd. Betty was a special member and vital part of her community. For many years, she and her husband sold fine art and were known in the community for their custom framing work. She was a faithful member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where she played an active role in various capacities. Betty was involved with Cub Scouts and was the first female Commissioner in the state of Connecticut where she served for nine years. Betty also knitted and leant her talent to children and families in need by working with the Lamb's Wool organization. She is survived by her sons, Richard Vernon Powell (Mary) of Swathmore, Pa., Jeffrey Howard Powell of Norfolk, and George LeRoy Powell (Amy) of Nags Head, N.C.; a daughter, Gene Ann Demsky (John) of Stoney Creek; a sister, Patricia "Pat" Mitchell of Pa.; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Vernon LeRoy Powell; a brother, James Boyd; a sister, Grace Wicke; and a granddaughter, Beth Demsky. A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ed Childress. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to "Lamb's Wool Ministry" c/o Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
