The First Annual Amherst First Responders Parade and Celebration in Amherst drew several hundred people to South Main and Second streets Saturday afternoon.

The parade, followed by a concert at the town hall parking lot and fireworks, was a new event the Town of Amherst organized to stir up community spirit prior to the July 4 holiday week.

The event also introduced a new parade route starting from the Amherst Public Library, taking a right onto Second Street and ending at Second Stage Amherst with a goal of easing congestion on the U.S. 60 traffic circle.

Town council member Sarah Ogden said she was pleased the event drew a large crowd, rain held off and the new route served as a good trial run for the town’s Christmas parade.
