Second Stage in Amherst, a nonprofit center, recently received the Amherst County Chamber of Commerce’s Nonprofit of the Year Award.
“It’s wonderful that people are discovering Second Stage,” Penny Hawes, operations manager at Second Stage, said in a statement. “We have a great core of dedicated people who have brought this building from being slated for demolition to the beautiful, welcoming space it is today.”
The center operates in a former church building on Second Street through a lease with Amherst County. In addition to serving as a venue for performances, it has 10 studios rented to artists and small businesses, hosts a summer arts camp, runs the Second Street Farmer’s Market on Thursdays from May through October, and offers rental of its public spaces for events ranging from birthday parties to weddings.
