Sweet Briar College’s Dairy Loop will host Girls on the Run of Central Virginia for a spring celebration 5K race Saturday, May 4. The race starts at 9:30 a.m. with pre-race activities set to start at 8 a.m.
Girls on the Run of Central Virginia is an independent council of Girls on the Run International, a network of more than 200 councils across 50 states and Washington, D.C. Girls between ages 8 and 13 spend 12 weeks in the program, including training to prepare for the semiannual 5K — a culminating event that recognizes and celebrates their efforts. Since fall 2011, Sweet Briar has supported the program in providing the scenic route on its campus, as well as help from students and staff helping out.
About 800 people are expected on campus for the event, according to the college.
“The mission of Girls on the Run is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident,” said Mary Hansen, council director. “The mission of Sweet Briar College is to prepare women to be productive, responsible members of a world community. Combined, these two missions help create a formidable group of individuals ready for their futures.”
