Amherst Rotary Club President Peter Bryan, right, presents a $1,000 check to Beth Gamble, who heads the Amherst Cares program, during the club's June 20 picnic in Amherst.

The Amherst Rotary Club recently voted to donate $1,000 each to the Amherst Volunteer Fire Department, the Amherst EMS lifesaving crew, a local veterans organization and two Amherst-based food outreach programs, Neighbors Helping Neighbors and Amherst Cares.

The club presented checks to representatives of the organizations at its June 20 picnic and its first meeting in May.

Amherst Rotary Club President Peter Bryan said the club recently celebrated its 80th anniversary and as it aggressively pursues membership it looks to take advantage of opportunities to support the community and “promote goodwill and support local organizations as much as we can.”

The club also annually gives scholarships to Amherst County High School students and globes for every second-grader in the county, according to Bryan.
