As the college football season inches closer to the National Championship game, Roseland resident and former Nelson Gov, Tony Barnett recently completed his senior season playing for the Old Dominion Monarchs in Norfolk.

Barnett graduated from Neson County in 2013 then spent one year playing at Fork Union Milatary Academy, then spent his first year at ODU in 2015 as a redshirted freshman.

In his senior season Barnett is listed at 6-feet-4-inches and 330 pounds.

This season Barnett got a chance to play against Virginia Tech and Virginia.

Last year was an emotional season for the Monarchs as they opened the season in Lynchburg only to get beat, 52-10, by the Liberty Flames.

A few weeks later at home in Norfolk the Monarchs upset the Virginia Tech Hokies, 49-35.

Mark Wells was an assistant coach for the Govs when Barnett played for Nelson County.

“Tony was a joy to coach and one of the most coachable players I have ever coached and this is my 30th year,” said Wells.
