The Govs basketball team, under the leadership of Coach Brian Wilson, didn’t like the way the past season ended despite some highlights.
“We showed a great deal of growth during last season and we were able to experience some pretty good accomplishments but we are disappointed in how our season turned out and some of the one- and two-point close losses that we had,”said Wilson. “Everyone returning has been committed to fixing any little problems we had and striving for greatness on pursuit of being better than we were last season.”
This year’s team goal is simple: compete at a very high level and to be in a position to win every night.
Returning Gov players from last season’s team are seniors Trevon Lowery, and last season’s captains Brice Wilson and Houston Carter; juniors Mason Hughes, Jamel Rose, and George Brown, and sophomore Jaren Purvis. Moving up off last year’s JV team are juniors Trevor Hughes and Kobe Gray as well as sophomores Blayz McGarry and Rysun Ebelherr.
“Our newcomers to the team are senior Thomas Harris, and transfers juniors Kavin Carter and Steven Fields. We have a great deal of experience returning and our kids possess a lot of athleticism, speed and quickness,” said Wilson. “We believe that offense will come and we can be effective, but we hope to play great on defense all the time as this is the area of the game we can control.”
While the team is coming together Wilson will be counting on a pair of seniors to run the show.
“Houston Carter and Brice Wilson have both been four-year varsity players, Houston every year here at Nelson and Brice who transferred in his sophomore year played his freshman year on varsity at The Covenant School,” said Wilson. “Both of these young men are excellent leaders and have a purpose for leading this team by their example in their last campaign on a high school basketball court.”
The Govs will open their season on Dec. 6.
