The Govs basketball team traveled to Naruna last week to battle the William Campbell Generals.
Although it looked like it was going to be a blowout after the Govs jumped out to a 17-4 first-quarter lead, the Generals closed the gap in the second half. Nelson held on for the 57-46 Dogwood District victory.
Nelson would take a 24-15 halftime lead into the locker room but when the action resumed the Generals were not about to roll over for the Govs.
Gov Jaren Purvis played a very physical game in the paint and lead his team with22 points and 16 rebounds.
Brice Wilson was the only other Gov to hit double figures as he poured in 14 points.
Both teams offenses had their best output in the final quarter as Nelson posted 22 points and the Generals added 17.
"We had a short week this week and it's nice to enter a well deserved break with a win. William Campbell played a really tough game tonight, their kids play hard and worked hard for Coach Watson," said Govs coach Brian Wilson. "Our boys started fast before going into a little slump. I'm happy we were able to sustain our lead and pull off the win. We are excited to learn from any mistakes that we've made, take care of our bodies and hope to make a strong push to finish this season strong as we wrap up our first time through in the Dogwood before round 2 begins next week."
