The Lady Govs soccer team is off and running with a 3-1 record in its early season under first-year Nelson coach Bryan Ferren.
The Lady Govs have posted wins against Rappahannock, Amherst and Altavista with its only loss coming against Fort Defiance.
Ferren noted his team has been focusing hard on possession and being first to the ball on the fifty–fifty opportunities, which was successful in the three wins.
“We lost a tough and physical home opener against a good Fort Defiance team and are looking forward to playing them later in the season,” Ferren said.
Ferren breaks down his stat leaders to date with comments on each.
» “Summer Scruggs has had a quick start to the season with 8 goals. Summer is very creative on the field playing in the striker position and has been supported from the wing play of Anne and Lauren Armstrong and the midfield,” said Ferren.
» “Kate Strong has done a good job distributing the ball as the attacking mid-fielder with 5 assists. She has worked well staying connected to the forwards in supporting the attack.
» “Rylee Truslow has recorded a shutout in each of the wins. Rylee has been supported by a very strong defensive back line, mid-fielder and the forward wings. She was player of the game in the Rappahannock match with 8 saves, 2 of which were breakaways. In total Rylee has a total of 19 saves in the four games.”
