The Lady Govs basketball team, coming off one of its best seasons in many years, was defeated 67-37 by Martinsville last week in regional action, ending its season with a 17-10 record.
“The game was a hard fought game, but Martinville was just too strong for us, but we didn’t quit,” Nelson coach Petey Vaughan said. “We still played hard and it’s sad the season had to come to an end only one game away from going to the state tournament. We had a good run playing for district title and making it to the final four of regionals.”
The Lady Govs advanced to play the Martinsville team by blasting Buckingham, 63-48.
Mariah Butler was red hot as she poured in 28 points while posting five steals.
Dominique Morrison and Megan Brown added 10 points each.
Nelson controlled the boards as Morrison, Brown and Delaney Stone grabbed nine rebounds each.
“We got out to a good start crashing the boards and finishing under the basket, but Buckingham didn’t give up as I was trying to run out the clock; that turned a couple turnovers into points,” Vaughan said.
