The Lady Govs basketball team fell victim to the Lady Hawks of Gretna 52-40 in last week’s Dogwood District Championships held on the winners’ court; it was the third time this season Nelson has lost to Gretna.
Nelson gave Gretna all it could handle in the first period playing the Lady Hawks to an even 14 -14 tie at the end of the first period.
It was the second period that did the Lady Govs in as Gretna posted 10 points while the Nelson offense managed four and from that point on trailed the Gretna squad.
“It was a bad shooting night for us; we played hard until the end. Gretna was just too strong down the stretch, a couple of turnovers led to easy scoring opportunities for the Lady Hawks,” said Nelson coach Petey Vaughan. “We were also forced to foul down the stretch extending their lead, and it was a hard-fought game.”
Despite the loss Nelson is still heading to the regionals which started on Feb. 18.
Vaughan staid his girls hoped to face Gretna again in the regionals.
“I’m proud of the girls to make it this far,” said Vaughan.” The girls never gave up. Delaney Stone scored 17 points, pulled down nine rebounds and posted three steals.
Dominique Morrison added seven points, eight rebounds and Hailea White contributed seven points, five rebounds and a pair of steals.
The Nelson squad advanced to the finals by knocking off Altavista 43-29 behind a 17-point night from White. Stone added eight points and eight rebounds.
Vaughan said he team got off to a good start while playing its style of defense, chasing after the ball and forcing turnovers.
