The Lady Govs basketball team was dealt a pair of defeats last week falling to Liberty High school, 36-19, on Dec. 18 and one night earlier dropped a 49-43 decision to Gretna.
Against Gretna Nelson was led by Hailea White with 19 points; Anayaih Randolph, 8; Mariah Butler, 4; Alexis Martin, 6; Dominique Morrison, 4; and Rachel Thompson with 2.
Tuesday at Gretna was the Lady Govs’ Dogwood District opener but Lady Hawks coach Heb Daniel always has his team prepared to protect its home court.
Gretna got off to a 12-5 first quarter lead but after an offensive outburst the Nelson girls battled their way to a 28-28 tie.
“We stayed close, going back and forth scoring, it’s no doubt about Gretna being a good team,” said Nelson coach Petey Vaughan. “Down the stretch the girls played their hearts out but the Gretna offense was key down the stretch knocking down key free throws and big 3-pointers to seal the deal.”
Last Thursday the Lady Govs battled Liberty High School with hopes of playing the Bedford team with a tight defense.
“Our plan tonight was to play hard-nosed defense and we executed the test holding liberty to just 19 first-half points,” said Vaughan.
“We struggled on the offensive end for the first quarter but got it together in the second when our press got some big key steals stretching the lead. We played well in both games and we can improve on a lot of things but I’m proud of the fight these girl put up playing with low numbers and playing hard. We are a small team but we play with a lot of heart and determination and I’m proud of them for that.”
