The Govs basketball team defeated Altavista last Friday 63-53 on the Colonels court.

Brice Wilson poured in 17 points followed by Jaren Purvis with 16 and Houston Carter rounded out the double figures scorer with 14.

Purvis and Wilson also lead the defense 13 combined steals while Purvis controlled the board for Nelson with 11 rebounds.

" It feels great to get a win, said Govs coach Brian Wilson." We are now off to a good start in the dogwood district but our kids aren’t satisfied and know that we want to play a cleaner game. We are ready to get back to work next week on a four game week."

The Govs were coming off a 68-14 loss to Charlottesville high school.

" We got off to a slow start and had to fight and claw back into the game but we’re never able to flip the score," said Wilson." Charlottesville is a good team with some really good athletes and have many of their players back from last season’s team. To win a game like this we can’t make as many mental errors as we did. We shot a better percentage than they did despite the slow start but they were able to capitalize off a big night from the free throw line shooting 21 for 34."

The Govs will make the short ride across the county line on Friday as the varsity boys and girls head to Amherst to battles the Lancers.

The night before on Thursday the junior varsity squads taake over the Lancers court.
