The Govs soccer team was recently rewarded for its perfect Dogwood District season with seven players being named to the All-District first team.
Silas Turner was named coach of the year. Wesley Boor took the Player of the Year award along with setting a school record with 100 career goals scored.
“This is an incredibly talented group of Nelson players select to first team all Dogwood District,” said Turner. “They not only posses technical and tactical skill, they are great competitors and team players. It was a pleasure coaching all of these guys.”
Turner comments on each first team player.
Wesley Boor: “He had an impressive season and career. Scoring 100-plus goals in a career is a phenomenal achievement. I wish him all the best playing at the next level at Randolph.”
Ian Strong: “He is an exceptional link-up player. He served in some great assists this year and scored some big goals.”
Houston Carter: “Houston is one of the hardest working guys on the team at both ends of the field. He has the ability to beat guys one on one and the athleticism to get on the end of most crosses.”
Tyler Widdifield: “Tyler had an exceptional season as a sophomore. He can confidently play any position in midfield or offense.”
Casey Widdifield: “Casey is a force to be reckoned with. He controls the game on defense and on offense. I wish him all the best in continuing his soccer career at Emory and Henry next year.”
Max Adams: “He is an exceptional individual defender and leader of the defense. He also has the ability to start the attack from the back.”
Clay Umbarger: “Clay is one of the fastest players on the field. He is dangerous going forward combining with the attack and has the speed to recover on defense.”
Ramiro Chavez, Tucker Shannon and Cole Harbodin were named to the All-Dogwood District second team.
David John McGrath and Jonas Zawhorodny were selected as honorable mentions in the district.
