The Govs soccer team captured its fifth straight win last week by blanking the Amherst Lancers, 3-0.

Wesley Boor, the Govs’ leading scorer booted in two goals while teammate Houston Carter recorded the third score.

The Govs are on spring break and will return to action April 8 against Dan River in Ringgold.

Nelson goalkeeper Conner Utley played the entire match and was credited with the shutout.

“I am really proud of all my guys. Amherst is a tough team. We were missing two key starters in both the Madison game and the Amherst game and I am really proud of all they guys that stepped up in their absence,” said Nelson Coach Silas Turner. “I am excited to see our team defense improve as we have posted 3 shutouts after letting in 4 goals in our first two games.”

Lady Govs soccer

The Lady Govs soccer team was shut out by Madison County, 9-0, last week for its only match.

“We lost against a really strong and well highly skilled team. They played the style that we are working towards in Nelson,” said Lady Govs coach Byan Ferren.

“They maintained their shape throughout the game and possessed the ball with a controlled first touch and accurate passing. This is a style of play that we will are working to get to but takes a lot of hard work.”
