The Govs baseball team lost a 12-inning marathon in its season opener last week with a 1-0 loss to Rappahannock under new head coach Chris Dowdy.
Garrett Walker and Walker Graham had the only hits for the Nelson team in 38 trips to the plate.
That loss was followed by a short trip to Amherst two days later where the Govs ran into a 14-2 whipping by the Amherst team in a five-inning contest shortened by the mercy rule. The Govs jumped on the Lancers in the first inning when they scored a pair of runs.
Amherst responded with four runs of its own and would score in the next four frames while Nelson failed to produce any more scores the rest of the game.
The Nelson team was its own worst enemy with four errors that kept the Lancers rounding the bases. Zach Ponton got tagged with the loss. The Govs will hit the road again and head to Madison County on March 20 to battle the Mountaineers.
The remaining Nelson roster includes Cameron Banton, Blake Campbell, Kendrick Brown, Logan Campbell, Jacob Tomlin, Colt Mauer, Landen Campbell, Parker Clements and Jack Rogers.
