The Virginia Distillery Company’s split V logo, which signifies the coming together of old and new distilling methods in its whiskys, sits in front of the Visitors Center.

Virginia Distillery Company is set to introduce the Commonwealth Collection, a new series in the distillery’s lineup of whiskies that will feature different styles of finishes, in a “sneak peak” event Friday.

The event will focus on the first release in the series, a Cider Barrel Matured Virginia Highland Malt Whisky.

According to a news release, the new whisky begins as a Virginia Highland Malt, which arrives from the Scottish Highlands, and then is cask-finished in cider barrels from Potter’s Craft Cider, located in Free Union. Two hundred sixty-one barrels were produced.

“We’re thrilled to release the first expression from our Commonwealth Collection,” Virginia Distillery Company CEO Gareth H. Moore said. “This series provides the opportunity to utilize our expertise in creating unique finishes with the whisky while also leveraging the strengths of a number of different makers across the Commonwealth.”

Additional releases in the series will feature partnerships with other Virginia breweries, wineries and cideries.

Beginning Saturday, the new whisky will be available at the Virginia Distillery Company Visitors CenterLater this month, the whisky will be available in select stores throughout Virginia and Washington, D.C. A 750 milliliter bottle retails for $64.59 plus tax.
