The Nelson County FFA Agronomy and Farm Business Management teams gained further recognition earlier this month for earning second place honors in the nation at the 87th National FFA convention and Expo held in Louisville, Kentucky in October.
The groups were recognized with a joint resolution by the Virginia House of Delegates and the State Senate. Students also met with Senator Creigh Deeds and Delegates Matthew Fariss and Dickie Bell.
The legislators congratulated the students for their achievements and for representing Virginia on a national level.
The Farm Business Team consisted of Deightan McClellan, Phillip Saunders, Zach Barnes and Noah Fitzgerald. The Agronomy Team members were Colin Morris, Ruth Fitzgerald, Jacob Saunders and Patrick Saunders. Team Advisors were Ed McCann and Scott Massie. Nelson County junior Jamie Connor assisted the Agronomy Team to prepare for the national competition. The students were accompanied by Superintendent Jeff Comer, Emily Fitzgerald, Robert Barnes and Ed McCann Sr.
In a newsletter sent this week, Fariss said he was glad to have the opportunity to formally recognize both teams.
“It was great to have Mr. McCann and his students come visit the Capitol to be recognized during session for their hard work and accomplishment,” the newsletter states.
