Hillcats outfielder Matt Lipka prepares to take batting practice Thursday during workouts at City Stadium. Lynchburg opens tonight at Potomac.

Rehabbing from an injury is no fun, Matt Lipka said. It’s a daily grind with little in the way of rewards. But maybe, in retrospect, the hamstring injury that Lipka suffered less than halfway through the 2012 season might turn out to be a positive.

The more he thinks about it, the more he realizes his right hamstring was unstable. He could feel it on his throws from center field, when he ran the bases, when he sprinted after liners in the outfield. Finally, one day in Salem, when he was running to first base, his hamstring snapped and his bounceback season with the Lynchburg Hillcats was over.
