With former Amherst County coach Eddie Carter and his successor, former Lancers girls coach Segar Jordan, watching from the stands at E.C. Glass, Liberty Christian Academy senior A.J. Richerson, who played his first three years at Amherst, helped spark a fourth-quarter rally against William Fleming in the second game of Saturday’s ninth-annual Beacon Classic at E.C. Glass High School, a 58-48 defeat for the Bulldogs, their first setback in seven tries this year.
Richerson trimmed the Colonels’ advantage to 52-44 by taking an outlet pass from Blue Ridge transfer Joshua Majors, hitting a tough layup and completing the three-point play after being fouled and sinking the first of two free throws after forcing a back-court steal. But Fleming (5-2), fresh off a 55-42 loss at Virginia Episcopal School on Friday night, closed out the contest by drawing a charge on Staunton River transfer Cameron Holdren, shooting 4-of-6 from the free-throw line and with an emphatic slam by Quashawn Robertson off a fast-break assist from Warren Craft, who led all scorers with 16 points.
