After eight plus seasons, Bill Walton has resigned as the head coach of the boys’ basketball team at Reidsville High School due to health concerns and has been replaced by Chris Carter.

In eight-plus seasons with the Rams, Walton compiled a record of 145-72, including four seasons of 20 wins or more. His most successful campaign was just two years ago when he guided Reidsville to the 2-A Final Four and a 26-4 record.

Walton was just the third Reidsville High basketball coach since the mid-1940s. NCHSAA Hall of Fame coach Hoy Isaacs was the RHS head man from 1946 through the 1982-83 season. He was followed by current Danville George Washington head coach Ron Parson (1983-2005). Walton succeeded Parson and joined the Rams for the 2005-06 season.

Reidsville High Principal Elliot Miller released the following statement:

"Unfortunately, Coach Walton had to step down from his post as Reidsville High School's head basketball coach due to health concerns. Coach Walton has been dedicated to RHS athletics giving his service and time for over 10 years. He will continue to be a proud supporter of the Rams. We appreciate his years of dedicated service to Reidsville High and the Reidsville community."

Carter, a former Morehead High School principal, has been named interim head coach through the remainder of the season. He was introduced to the team before Tuesday afternoon's practice.

Carter retired as principal at George Washington Danville in the spring of 2013. He also previously coached boys’ basketball for Danville GW.

Current Ram assistants Kevin Ketchie and Brian Knowles will remain on the staff.

Reidsville is in a rebuilding mode following the graduation of every player from the 2012 final four team. They finished 6-18 last season but are off to a 4-5 start this season. They will carry a two-game winning streak into Friday night's Mid-State 2-A Conference opener at Siler City Jordan-Matthews.

Reidsville opted to reschedule Monday night's boys’ game with Rockingham County and tonight's game with Morehead in the light of Walton's resignation and his replacement being named. The Morehead game will be made up Jan. 29.

Rockingham and Reidsville girls played Monday night, but the boys’ game was pushed back until Feb. 12.
