The Town of Wentworth will host their Fifth Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 8, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The parade starts at the Highway Patrol/NCDMV office on NC 87 just south of town limits and will run along NC 65 to the Old Wentworth School.

Performance stops are scheduled at the Wentworth Town Hall, which doubles as a judging station and the National Guard Armory.

Long-time Wentworth resident Irene Scales will serve as Grand Marshall. Councilwoman Iris Powell suggested Ms. Scales, saying she is known by all who live in and around the old courthouse in Wentworth, and has been a model citizen.

Town Administrator, Brenda Ward, said that she & Town Finance Officer, Yvonne Russell, along with the Sheriff’s Department, EMS, and the Wentworth Volunteer Fire Department have worked very hard to insure a safe parade.

Russell added that this year’s parade will see the largest number of entries yet, with at least 70 participants. That includes Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus, Ms. North Carolina, Arlie Honeycutt from Garner NC, the Rockingham County High School Band, Rockingham County High School JROTC and the Jamestown Pipes and Drums Band. Several churches, scout troops, classic cars, unique floats, and equestrian entries will round out the parade

Ward also wanted to remind people to bring toys for the Marine Corps Reserve “Toys for Tots” program. The Toys for Tots truck will be collecting gifts along the parade route.

Shady Grove Baptist Church will be set up on the front lawn of the Wentworth Town Hall during the event, giving out free coffee and hot chocolate. Santa Claus will also return to town hall after the parade to take pictures with any kids from the area.

Traffic detours

Starting at 10:45 a.m., there will be temporary detours and roadblocks around the parade route until the parade has safely cleared the major intersections.

Anyone trying to get to the western area of the county or to Eden via NC 65/87, or from the western area to Reidsville/Eden, will be directed by officers at the following locations: NC 87/Vance Street Ext., Sandy Cross Road and NC65/87 at Wentworth Street, NC 87 and Ashley Loop Road, Camp Dan Valley Road and Wentworth Street, NC 87 at Percy Road, and NC 65 at Hancock Road.
