Limiting part-time hours unintended result of health law

As Jan. 1, 2014 nears, bringing with it new regulations, fees and penalties under the Affordable Care Act, employers of all sizes are searching for strategies to keep costs down.

David Barney, vice president at Scott Benefit Services in Lynchburg, said the act’s complicated, phased rollout will likely bring about a variety of unintended consequences. These days, he said, one of the most common changes employers are making is to limit part-time workers’ hours, keeping them below the 30-hour threshold for mandated coverage.
