AMHERST — An audience of hundreds fell silent Thursday night as author Barbara Kingsolver cracked open her latest novel “Flight Behavior” and began to read, pulling listeners at Sweet Briar College into a fictional valley of butterflies.

It’s the butterflies that now forever link Kingsolver, the author of 14 novels, to the tiny women’s college and the butterfly expert who teaches there, Lincoln Brower.
