Crews continued to search Saturday for a Richmond man, after he was reported missing Friday on Smith Mountain Lake.
John Shoop, 74, was apparently on a small sailboat by himself Friday evening, said Sgt. Brian Young, of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
Shoop was on vacation with family and friends when they noticed he was missing from the sailboat.
Search teams fromt the game department, the Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire & Rescue Squad and the Scruggs Fire Department and Rescue Squad worked from 5:30 p.m. Friday until dark to no avail. That search resumed Saturday morning at about 8 a.m., Young said.
"We will continue to search until we find Mr. Shoop or our resources are exhausted," he said.
Young said the water depths where Shoop was sailing spanned from 160 to 180 feet.
Using sonar can also prove difficult with many buildings and trees under the lake's surface, Young said.
"You have to worry about devices getting caught in treetops."
Young said crews will scour the lake Saturday until dark.
