    Allen Hale, president of the Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel Foundation, walks in front of the the Blude Ridge Tunnel’s east portal in Afton. After receiving a $749,149 award from the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Commonwealth Transporation Board, the tunnel’s renovation project that has been in the works for 12 years now is continuing. Phase I is slated to begin as soon as this fall.

The inky black hole carved out of greenstone opens into an elliptical tunnel underneath Rockfish Gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Drips of water sparkle in the cool air in front of the Blue Ridge Tunnel’s east portal in Afton, heralding the soon to come restoration and reopening of the tunnel to the public.
