Lawmakers say Va. should set new example on sterilization

RICHMOND — Calling Virginia “the chief bad example” of a misguided science that led to the sterilization of its residents for 55 years, two lawmakers and a Lynchburg resident said Tuesday the practice calls for more than an apology.

“We call on the General Assembly and Gov. Bob McDonnell to take decisive action to right a decades-long policy” that sterilized 7,259 people in its mental-health institutions, Del. Patrick Hope, D-Arlington, said.
