The subtle striations in the earth tell the story. Underneath the dark, rich topsoil and interweaving the duller yellow dirt, it can be spied: streaks of red clay — angular, even spaced, unmistakable.

"There's one guy here, and there's another one alongside him," said Randy Lichtenberger, an archaeologist.
