Though the sun was not sunny, more than 600 children met at Amazement Square in downtown Lynchburg Saturday to craft striped hats, eat birthday cake and read in celebration of one of the world’s most beloved children’s authors — Dr. Seuss.

Saturday marked the good doctor’s 109th birthday, as well as National Read Across America Day. Ashleigh Karol, director of marketing for Amazement Square, said she hoped children who attended the birthday bash would leave with an increased interest in reading.
