Sweet Briar College will host two concerts this weekend.
SBC’s concert and chamber choirs and its new eight-singer group “Octavo” will perform during Homecoming and Families Weekend at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Chapel.
The concert is free an open to the public.
The choirs will sing selections from Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Suor Angelica,” Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria” and “How Lovely are the Messengers” by Mendelssohn, along with several Sweet Briar songs in honor of Homecoming.
“The story of ‘Suor Angelica’ takes place in a convent,” said Sweet Briar voice instructor and choir director Marcia Thom.
On Sunday, the Oxford-based a capella ensemble Voice will perform at 3 p.m. in Memorial Chapel. Some songs will feature the Sweet Briar College Chamber Choir.
Formed in 2006, the all-female trio performs a diverse repertoire of Hildegard von Bingen and other early masters, as well as world folk song arrangements and contemporary compositions.
Voice has appeared at venues in Europe and throughout the U.K.
