Amherst’s Jacob Sale pitched a four-hit shutout and Ashton Paige blasted a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first to carry the Lancers past Liberty 1-0 in a Seminole District quarterfinal game Monday. Sale struck out 10 and walked two. Paige was 2-for-2. Amherst will play Jefferson Forest at 5 p.m. in the semifinal at Heritage on Wednesday.
Heritage 9, Staunton River 8
Greg Chewning slammed the door for Heritage by shutting out Staunton River from the fifth inning on for the Pioneers in their win over the Golden Eagles in the Seminole District quarterfinals. Heritage plays Rustburg in the late semifinal game on Wednesday at Heritage.
Rustburg 3, Brookville 0
Rustburg’s Blake Forslund fired a no-hitter in the Red Devils’ victory over Brookville in the Seminole District quarterfinals. Forslund struck out 17 batters and walked four. Chris Anderson was 2-for-3 with a run and Chad Wisecarver was 1-2 with an RBI for Rustburg. The Red Devils face Heritage in the late semifinal game on Wednesday at Heritage.
Dogwood
Nelson County 16,  William Campbell 10
Nelson County’s Jared Truslow was 4-for-5 and drove in six runs in the Governors’ win over William Campbell in the first round of the Dogwood District tournament. Ben Ponton, Chris Jones and Jordan Wooten each had three hits for Nelson County (8-12). Ponton drove in four runs and also picked up a complete game victory. Jones and Wooten both scored four runs. Adam Holbrooks, Trip Green and Terrence Younger each had a homerun for the Generals. The Governors play at Appomattox on Wednesday, 6 p.m. in the semis.
Altavista 3, Dan River 2
Altavista’s Scott Dalton picked up a complete game victory for the Colonels in their win over Dan River in the first round of the Dogwood District tournament. Dalton allowed four hits, an earned run and struck out five batters. Rodney Winston’s solo homer in the third was the difference. Raye Shirey was 2-3 with a run for Altavista (9-11). The Colonels travel to Chatham on Wednesday, 6 p.m. for a semifinal matchup.
Softball
Dogwood District
Altavista 11, Dan River 0
Altavista’s Brooke Short and Sarah Murphy combined on a two-hit shutout of visiting Dan River in the quarterfinals of the Dogwood District tournament. Short worked the first five innings to pick up the victory. She allowed a hit and struck out eight batters. Lauren Gibson led the Colonels (12-5) at the plate. She was 3-for-3 with a double, a three-run homer and 5 RBIs. Altavista plays William Campbell at 6 p.m. in Wednesday’s semifinals at William Campbell.
Appomattox 3, Chatham 2
Appomattox’s Jessica McCormick held Chatham to two runs, three hits and struck out 13 batters in the Raiders’ victory over Cavaliers in the Dogwood District quarterfinals. McCormick was also 1-for-2 at the plate. Jamica Jones led Appomattox (10-8) going 2-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBIs. Tara McFadden was also 2-for-3 and drove in a run. The Raiders play at Gretna at 6 p.m. in Wednesday’s semifinals.
William Campbell 9, Nelson County 2
Heather Littles, Brittany Lawhorn and Holly Elder each hit a home run for William Campbell in the Generals Dogwood District first round win over Nelson County. Meloney Yoho had a homer for the Governors. William Campbell will host Altavista at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the semis.
Seminole District
Rustburg 4, Amherst 2
Rustburg’s Sammy Bogolin hit a three-run homerun in the third inning to carry the sixth-seeded Red Devils past third-seeded Amherst in the Seminole District quarterfinals. Bogolin was 2-for-3 with double, a homer and 4 RBIs. Kayla Rose, Bianca Gilmore and Renesha Chiles each had two hits for the Lancers (12-7). Rustburg (6-11) plays Jefferson Forest on Wednesday at Jefferson Forest.
Liberty 8, Staunton River 1
Stephanie Chambers and Casey Bartholomew each had three hits for Liberty in the Minutemen’s victory over Staunton River in the Seminole District quarterfinals. Page Murphy and Mattie Witt added two hits apiece for Liberty (13-6) and Brooke Davis struck out 10 in earning the victory. Samantha Mayhew was 2-for-4 for the Golden Eagles. The Minutemen play Brookville at 5 p.m. at Rustburg in the semis.
Jefferson Forest 5, Heritage 2
Carly Farmer picked up the win for Jefferson Forest and Cara Hanell had a homerun for the Cavaliers in their victory over Heritage in the Seminole District quarterfinals. Jefferson Forest play Rustburg on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Track & Field
Liberty Christian Academy’s girls track and field team, in only its second season competing as a varsity sport, captured the Virginia Independent Schools state championship on Saturday at Sports Backer Stadium in Richmond.
The Bulldogs, led by seniors Christina Mitchell, Tami Tolsma and Brittany Bingham who will all compete at Liberty University next fall, racked up 120½ points to overcome Potomac School (93), with Virginia Episcopal School placing eighth (33) with just three participants.
They also got strong performances out of Dana Mercer, an eighth grader, who was third in the 100 and 200 and ran the first leg of LCA’s winning 400 relay (50.70), followed by Burggraf, Bingham and Mitchell. Bingham won the 400 (59.47) and Mitchell placed first in the 300 hurdles (46.08).
