CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Washington College defeated Lynchburg 12-9 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday.
Washington opened up a 2-0 lead with 9:52 to go in the first behind goals from Kolyn Kirby and Chris Read. LC answered back with two goals from Dean Evans and Tyler Tolson. WC scored three of the next four goals to take another two goal advantage. LC would close out the half scoring two of the final three scores to go into the half down 6-5.
Ryan Cranston led Lynchburg with two goals while Tyler Tolson contributed with one goal and two assists.
Washington (14-3) locked down Lynchburg in the second half, holding the Hornets to just four goals after intermission while finding the back of the net six times. Overall, Tolson tallied three scores and two assists for Lynchburg while Cranston and Johnny Black each added two goals.
Washington advances to face Gettysburg College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday. Lynchburg concludes its season with a team-record 16 wins and just three losses.

Virginia 10, UMBC 9
Attackman Garrett Billings scored three goals, including the game-winner, to lift Virginia over UMBC Sunda at Klöckner Stadium in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Billings’ third goal with 6:50 to play broke the game’s fifth tie and set up a quarterfinal matchup against Maryland Saturday in Annapolis, Md.

Softball
LC postponed
The finals of the NCAA Division III Softball Regional in Fayetteville, N.C., has been pushed back one day.
Lynchburg and Ursinus College (Pa.) and will play today at noon.

Tennis
Vines takes first
Mark Vines, USPTA Director of Tennis at Oakwood Country Club, won the USTA National Catagory II Men’s 50 Tournament in Atlanta on Sunday.
Vines beat Curtis Dashiels of Atlanta, 6-4, 6-3 in the clay court finals.  With this win, Vines maintains his No. 2 national ranking in the Men’s 50’s division and keeps his 24-match win streak alive.

Prep soccer
Fresta Valley 3,
New Convenant 2
In a tightly contested battle, Fresta Valley defeated New Covenant in the VACA girls soccer final, 3-2, on Saturday.
New Covenant had previously held a perfect 12-0 conference record and boasted a 3-0 victory over Shenandoah Valley in the first round of the VACA’s.
Three Gryphons players were named to the All-Conference team: Senior Marti Deacon, and sophomores Ashley Bartell and Laura Sharrett.
