Heritage Hall of Fame gains new former stars

As part of its Wednesday night awards banquet, Heritage High inducted the second class of its Athletic Hall of Fame.

The new members are Dr. Jay Hopkins, who has served as the Pioneers’ team physician from the school’s opening in 1976 until his retirement this summer; Dr. John Walker, Amherst County’s retiring schools superintendent who played football at Virginia before teaching physical education and serving as Heritage’s head football coach from 1986 to 1990, winning three Western District championships and reaching the Northwest Region playoffs four times in that five-year span; Jimmy Green, the Pioneers’ first football coach who also coached track and field, baseball, boys basketball and served as the athletic trainer; and Meredith (White) Collins, who led the Lady Pioneers to a Group AAA state title in 1977.

Glass wins Supremacy Trophy

For the 26th consecutive year, E.C. Glass High won the Western Valley District’s Athletic Supremacy Trophy, awarded by the district’s athletic directors to the best all-around athletic program.

All of the district schools’ boys and girls varsity sports teams accumulate points toward the title based on regular-season victories and postseason finishes. Glass, which will join the Seminole District in 2009, won this year’s honor by half of a point over Franklin County while GW-Danville finished a distant third.

Tennis

JF’s Huff falls in semifinals

Jefferson Forest senior Morgan Huff lost her Group AA semifinal singles match to Hidden Valley’s Kristin Harter, 6-1, 6-1, Thursday at Radford University.

“She didn’t really have her game on today and the other girl played really well,” Cavaliers coach Susan Ranowsky said.

Harter later lost to defending state champion Tori Ford of Lafayette 6-1, 6-1, in the final.

Today, Josh Ranowsky, will team up with Tyler Johnston in JF’s boys doubles state semifinal match today.

Baseball

Three Cavs picked on first day

Virginia juniors David Adams, Greg Miclat and Jacob Thompson of Danville were picked in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft on Thursday. Adams was a fourth-round choice of the New York Yankees, Miclat was a fifth-round selection by Baltimore and Thompson was drafted in the fifth round by Atlanta.
