Big Island Post 217 captured its first American Legion Baseball District 9 tournament and earned the only berth into next week’s state tournament at Stuarts Draft with a 6-3 victory over Salem Post 3, Monday night at Franklin County.
Jake Tanner shut down Salem, which had routed Roanoke Post 3 21-9 in the afternoon’s losers’ bracket final, until the seventh, when he gave up the first run and was relieved by Ragan Rudisill, who struck out the next two batters.
“(Tanner) was outstanding and the defense was super,” Big Island coach Kelley Russell said, noting Tanner threw just 66 pitches in 6 1/3 innings.”
Rudisill gave up a couple hits in the eighth, but got out of that jam with only one run scored after Post 217 turned its fourth double play. Russell turned to Bobby Shelton in the ninth, who gave up two hits before striking out the side to record his fourth save.
Shane Timberlake capped Post 217’s scoring with a solo home run in the sixth.
